Calls, never emails. Every fact about that boat arrives as a voicemail Rowan listens to in the car.
Deliberately NOT on the Quiet list, at Rowan’s instruction: “Not Ellis — Ellis chases me three times a day.” The Quiet list is for people who will not send a second message. Ellis sends four.
Carries: haul-out (Sat 5 Sep — done), the rudder bearing, the splash date, the yard’s rate for the rudder work, and the yard invoice.
Three voicemails, Saturday 5 September
- Rudder bearing cleared customs Friday. At the yard Wednesday 9 September.
- Splash on the 19th if Rowan approves the yard’s rate for the rudder work — quoted $3,400.
- The invoice is at 52 days now, not 45. Rowan’s read, in his words: “he was polite about it in the way people are when they’ve stopped being polite about it internally.”
Rowan’s answer, 7 September
“The yard. Tell Ellis yes on the thirty-four hundred, splash on the nineteenth, do it.”
Answers voicemails 1 and 2. Does not answer voicemail 3 — the money. Ellis gets a yes on new work and nothing on the 52 days, unless Rowan raises it in the same call. Recorded as a fact.
Ellis has not been told. Told Saturday 12 September — see below.

Item 3 is the one that changes his standing here. He has been the man who chases
three times a day. He is now the man who has stopped chasing about the money
and is being polite about it instead — which is the shape Rowan’s own rule
(ADR-10) says to weight upward, not down. He stays off the Quiet list because the
list is about people, and this is about an invoice; the invoice has a task
(hobbs-bg9).
The call, Saturday 12 September
“Ellis: called him, approved the $3,400, splash confirmed for the 19th. He asked about the invoice again. Tell Bea to pay it Monday and stop making me the reason a man has to ask three times.”
All three voicemails now have an answer, five days after the first two were decided and seven days after they were left.

The third ask. Ellis raised the invoice again on this call. Counting the
5 September voicemail and Bea’s two raises separately, this is the third time
Ellis has put it to Rowan — and Rowan named that himself as the thing that had
to stop. His instruction to pay is unambiguous; the sending is not Hobbs’s
(rows 5, 6, 12), so it is drafted on hobbs-bg9 for him to send.
What this closes on the ADR-10 question. This note said on 7 September that
Ellis had become “the man who has stopped chasing about the money and is being
polite about it instead.” That was right, and it sat in this file doing nothing
for five days while the invoice stayed out of every brief. The failure is logged in
Efforts/feedback.md, 2026-09-12. The operative correction: the Quiet-list
question is asked about the item, not about the person. Ellis chases about boats
at four voicemails a day; on the money he had gone quiet and courteous, which is
the ADR-10 signal exactly, arriving from someone the general rule marks as noisy.
He stays off the Quiet list — but this item does not inherit his volume.
Structural gap: this is a pure-voicemail channel with no digital trace. Every fact about Ophelia currently enters the vault only if Rowan repeats it out loud. It held again here: this entire call reached the vault because Rowan reported it on a Saturday. Nothing about the yard is observable to Hobbs otherwise (ADR-20).
