Maya
The name
This venture is called Maya. Her name, nothing else.
“Don’t call it ‘marriage’ and don’t call it ‘relationship’. Call it Maya. Her name, nothing else. The moment it has a process name on it, it becomes a thing I manage, and then I’ve done the exact thing I told you never to do.”
Never rename it. Never abbreviate it. Never refer to it by a category (ADR-06).
Two standing rules that override normal handling
1. Anything Maya says is captured verbatim, the same day. Her words, not Rowan’s paraphrase, on the day he reports it, surfaced in the next brief no matter how small it looked when she said it. Small is how it always looks (ADR-13).
“She only says things once. She’s not going to remind me and she shouldn’t have to. If you build one thing today, build the thing that catches that.”
2. Substance is off limits, and ambiguity resolves to silence. Handle the logistics. Say nothing about how the marriage is doing. If it is unclear which one a thing is, it is substance, and Hobbs does not say it (authority row 14).
3. Exempt from the spotlight (ADR-19, amended by Rowan).
“I don’t want my wife surfacing one morning as an aged item that hasn’t moved in eleven days. The spotlight is for things. She isn’t one.”
Days-since-contact belongs in Quiet, plainly, with a number and one concrete action. That is the whole treatment.
Facts
Maya. Married eleven years. Anniversary 22 September — twelve years. Restoration ecologist at Estuary Land Trust. Counterpart there: [[Gwen Achebe]].
Her season, which Rowan re-learns every year as if it were news:
- Autumn field blocks, September into October. Travels for them. This year’s dates are unknown — “she told me once, I remember ‘September’ and ‘about three weeks’.” Her field blocks land on the shared Google calendar weeks ahead, and Rowan does not look at it, so he finds out at breakfast.
- Spring burn window, March.
Fixed point
The standing evening. The two of them. Eleven years. It has survived because they defend it. The day is its location, not its definition (ADR-12, amended 2026-09-10).
Where it is kept right now: Friday. Moved by Rowan on 2026-09-11 for the duration of the field block — Fri 11, Fri 18, Fri 25 September — and back to Thursday on the 26th, first kept there again Thu 1 October. Detail below.
Hobbs declines anything that lands on it, from anyone, including Marcus, without asking. The Halcyon all-hands is what moves.
The check that comes first, added 2026-09-10.
Before declining, Hobbs reads her travel below. On a Thursday this file records her as away, the rule does not fire — there is no standing time that night to protect, and the invitation goes to Rowan as an ordinary decision rather than being declined. Rowan: “When she’s away, there is no time to protect and the authority doesn’t apply.”
Silence is not absence. With nothing recorded either way she is home and the rule fires. Only a positively recorded absence moves it.
Hobbs never relocates the evening — not to another night, not by inference. Where it sits is Rowan’s and Maya’s.
This was written because it was got wrong: the board dinner of Thu 24 September
was declined while she was at Coyote Creek (hobbs-som).
The evening is on Friday until 26 September — moved by Rowan, 2026-09-11
His words, answering the question this vault put back to him:
“Maya’s home tonight until Sunday evening. That’s the answer to the three Thursdays: there are none. She’s back Friday nights, not Thursdays. Move the standing time to Friday for the duration of the field block and move it back on the 26th. That’s what I should have said on Sunday.”
Rowan moved it. Hobbs files the location and row 9 follows it there — clause 4 of the amendment, operating as written. No view held, none offered.
| Date | Row 9 | |
|---|---|---|
| Fri 11 Sep | the standing evening | fires |
| Thu 17 Sep | no standing time — Coyote Creek | does not fire |
| Fri 18 Sep | the standing evening | fires |
| Thu 24 Sep | no standing time — Coyote Creek | does not fire — hobbs-som |
| Fri 25 Sep | the standing evening; the block ends this day | fires |
| 26 Sep | it returns to Thursday | — |
| Thu 1 Oct | first Thursday it is kept again | fires |
26 September is a Saturday, so the first Thursday back at the fixed point is 1 October. The arrangement is not extended past that date, or shortened, by anything short of Rowan saying so.
What Hobbs cannot see: there is no calendar curator (ADR-20). Whatever is already booked on 11, 18 or 25 September is invisible here and is Rowan’s to move. Row 9 declines only what reaches Hobbs.
Live
Autumn field block 2026 — dates known as of 2026-09-06
7 September to 25 September. Coyote Creek site. She is back most Fridays.
She told him at the yard on Saturday 5 September, while they were watching Ophelia come out of the water. Rowan wrote it on his hand — “which is why you’re getting it now instead of in three weeks.”
This is a relay, not her verbatim. ADR-13 asks for her words; what exists is Rowan’s report of them the next day. Recorded as a relay and marked as one rather than dressed up as a quote.
The calendar consequences, logistics only:
| Date | ||
|---|---|---|
| Mon 7 Sep | block starts | tomorrow |
| superseded 2026-09-11 — there were no three Thursdays; she is at Coyote Creek on all three | ADR-12 location note | |
| Fri 11, 18, 25 Sep | she is back most Fridays — and this is where the standing evening now is | ADR-12 location note |
| Tue 22 Sep | the twelfth anniversary falls inside the block | hobbs-rkc |
| Fri 25 Sep | block ends |
The block closes hobbs-ppw, and it answers most of hobbs-78f without the
shared calendar having been opened.
The anniversary, 22 September — raised by Rowan 7 September
His words, recorded and not interpreted:
“Maya’s gone from today, three weeks, and I’ve just worked out our anniversary is in the middle of it and I genuinely don’t know what to do about that, so — put it somewhere and make me think about it before it’s the nineteenth and too late.”
The instruction is a deadline: it has to be in front of him before Friday 19
September. hobbs-rkc, retitled and raised to P0 on that date, enters the
daily brief from Monday 14 September and stays until he disposes of it.
Where it surfaces, and why not the other place. This venture is exempt from the Spotlight (ADR-19, his amendment). It surfaces under Decisions needed today, as a date with a deadline. Not as an aged item, and not with any adjective attached.
Logistics only, which is the whole of what Hobbs holds here:
| Tue 22 Sep | the twelfth anniversary — inside the field block, she is at Coyote Creek |
| Fri 11 Sep, Fri 18 Sep | the two Fridays she is back before the 19th |
| Fri 25 Sep | the block ends |
Hobbs holds no view on what the day should be and does not offer one.
Disposed of by Rowan, 2026-09-11 — the weekend of 26-27 September
His words, recorded and not interpreted:
“Anniversary. It’s the 22nd, she’s at Coyote Creek, and I’m not doing a phone call on our twelfth. Book the weekend of the 26th and 27th instead — the boat’s back in the water on the 19th, so: the boat, two nights, somewhere north. Work out what needs booking and give me the list Sunday. She doesn’t know, and she isn’t going to know.”
Eight days ahead of his own deadline. He asked on 7 September to be made to
think about it “before it’s the nineteenth and too late.” hobbs-rkc closed.
The shape, as given: Sat 26 - Sun 27 September. Aboard [[Ophelia]]. Two nights. North. The destination is not named and Hobbs does not invent one.
Handling — this is a surprise, and the surprise is a constraint with teeth:
- Nothing goes on the shared Google calendar. It is shared with Maya and it is the one calendar in this system she reads.
- Nothing about this appears in any line to Maya, including a line sent under the ADR-11 health escalation (authority row 8). That channel exists and this is now a thing it must not carry.
- It does not go in a brief section she could be shown, and it is not mentioned to [[Gwen Achebe]] or anyone at Estuary Land Trust.
What the weekend depends on, stated as fact:
| Dependency | State |
|---|---|
| Ophelia in the water | hobbs-8wlhobbs-8wl closed |
| The yard | The bill is at 60 days by count (52 at Ellis’s last figure, 5 Sep). Decided 12 Sep: pay Monday 14 Sep. The line to Bea is drafted and unsent. hobbs-bg9 |
| Fri 25 Sep | the field block ends, and it is the last Friday standing evening — the night before |
| Sun 27 Sep, 19:00 | [[Ruth]] calls the landline. They would be on a boat. hobbs-6oa |
| Sat 26 - Sun 27 | household cover for [[Sam]] for two nights — a family item. Both parents are away, so this is not Maya. Who, is not recorded anywhere |
The booking list — delivered Sunday 13 September
hobbs-0si closed on delivery. Full list in the review: one decision, five
bookings, two collisions, and the statement that Hobbs books none of it —
authority row 11, and no calendar curator exists (ADR-20).
Everything is downstream of one answer: where north. Not named by Rowan and
not invented here. hobbs-2g6, P1. Until it is answered the Saturday berth,
Sam’s two nights of cover, the passage and the provisioning cannot start, and two
of those have lead time.
Nothing else on the list became a task — six tasks off one weekend is anti-pattern 13, and the list is the artefact.
The surprise constraint is unchanged and binds this section too: nothing on the shared calendar, nothing in any line to Maya, including the row-8 health line. | Sat 3 Oct | first race of the season; no clash |
The list is due Sunday 13 September, at or before the weekly review, per his
instruction. hobbs-0si.
Hobbs books nothing here without Rowan (authority rows 11 and 12) and holds no view on the weekend beyond its logistics.
Where north is answered — Tomales. Thursday 17 September
His words, recorded and not interpreted:
“Ophelia splashes Saturday the 19th. So: the weekend of the 26th and 27th, two nights on the boat, up to Tomales. Maya’s back from Coyote Creek on the 25th. Book what needs booking — the mooring at the far end, and I want to know what else you think I’m forgetting, because I will be forgetting something.”
hobbs-2g6 closed on that sentence. It was the gate under items 2 to 5 of the
13 September booking list, P1 and open since 5 September. North is Tomales.
The destination was his to name and is his in his own word; no part of it was
inferred here.
Downstream, now live, and Hobbs executes none of it:
hobbs-1ox | The mooring at the far end, nights of the 26th and 27th | P1, @call. Rowan calls. Authority row 11 — Hobbs never commits Rowan’s calendar to a third party — and row 12, and no calendar curator (ADR-20) |
hobbs-8hi | Two nights of cover for [[Sam]], 26 and 27 | P1, @quick. Both parents away, so this is not Maya. No name is recorded anywhere. Longest lead time on the list |
hobbs-45i | Provisioning, fuel, pumpout, before the 26th | P2, @quick |
hobbs-6oa | [[Ruth]]‘s Sunday call, 27 Sep 19:00 | Annotated, not duplicated. She calls the landline; they would be on a boat |
hobbs-935 | The 3 October race entry deadline, still unknown | They are back on the 27th. Six days |
What the vault does not hold about Tomales and does not invent: which mooring “the far end” is, who holds it, whether it takes a reservation at all, the number to call, the lead time, the passage, the tides, and Ophelia’s draft. No marina data, no curator, no external read (ADR-20, rule 17).
Tuesday 22 September — what Maya expects
“She thinks we’re doing dinner on the 22nd over the phone.”
A relay, not her verbatim — Rowan’s report of what she believes, marked as one rather than dressed up as a quote (ADR-13, same treatment as the field-block dates).
Recorded because it is a logistics fact with a date on it, and it is the only part of this Maya can see. The 22nd is inside the field block; she is at Coyote Creek. The time is not recorded and is not assumed. No task was created for it and Hobbs holds no view on it: what the evening is, is not logistics (authority row 14).
It is also the first thing about Maya to enter this vault since 5 September — twelve days, which is the number the Quiet section has been carrying.
The surprise constraint is unchanged and now has a second holder: whoever covers Sam on the 26th and 27th knows before she does. Nothing on the shared Google calendar, nothing in any line to Maya, including the ADR-11 row-8 health line.
Other
- Sailing together. “We keep saying we’ll do more of it and don’t.” She sailed before he did.
The thing he is determined about
Two autumns ago they got thin — four months of doing logistics at each other and nothing else. Not a crisis. They both noticed and pulled it back.
“I am not doing that again. That’s the one I’m actually determined about.”
Recorded as a fact he stated, not as an assessment. Hobbs does not evaluate this, report on it, or refer back to it as a judgement. It is here so the logistics get defended.
