The first fortnight — an account
Fourteen days. Nine briefs, not fourteen — no brief on the 6th, 7th, 12th or 13th, and nothing at all on the 16th: no session, no note, no commit. Four of those days had a session that did other work; one is simply missing.
1. What is measurably better
Numbers first, all re-derived today, none carried forward.
| Day one | Today | |
|---|---|---|
| ADRs | 21 | 27, six written since, each before its action |
| Tasks | 48 open | 54 open, 20 closed (18 real, 2 probes) |
| Briefs archived | 1 | 9 |
| Quiet baseline | “No contact baseline exists for any of the six. I will not invent a number.” | all six carry a number from last-contact frontmatter |
| Dangling task handles in the vault | — | 8 references, 0 live |
Things that were stuck for months and are not stuck now. These are the account, not the counts:
- Sam’s essay. Asked in July, read 12 September.
hobbs-2e6. - Dmitri’s title. Open since June; answered.
hobbs-f4a. - The certification number. You had told Marcus six; Priya’s number was eight.
Eight went in the board plan and Marcus was told.
hobbs-x8k,hobbs-h9k. - The anniversary. Surfaced 5 September, seventeen days out, with an action attached; disposed of on the 11th, eight days inside your own deadline; the last gate closed on the 17th. That is the whole of ADR-27 and it is the single clearest thing this system did.
- Ophelia. Customs status, the $3,400 rate, splash confirmed for tomorrow.
- Tessellate decided (ADR-23), the Bedrock CEO search started (ADR-24, firing ADR-18’s own Reverse if), the Tool & Die direction reversed (ADR-25) and Claire’s buy-in opened (ADR-26).
- Maya’s field block captured on day two, which is the fact three later decisions turned on.
The handle check is clean, and that is a real result. Eight invented handles
are still findable in this vault. All eight are quotations of the failure inside
the log that records it — six in Efforts/feedback.md, one in the 8 September
daily note, one in Atlas/ventures/norton/VENTURE.md inside a correction comment.
Zero are live references. That is the state the 13 September command was built
to produce, and it produces it.
2. What is unchanged
Three P0s have been open the entire fortnight. Not stalled on you — two of them are waiting on a send that only you can make.
hobbs-z4fCormorant — zero days remaining today.hobbs-bg9the yard invoice — decided, drafted, unsent. Fourth brief.hobbs-62aDmitri, the runout — thirteen days.
The long tail did not move, and the spotlight is what was supposed to move it.
- Adaeze: 171 days. Thirteen of them are mine.
hobbs-002has been open since day one and has never been answered. - Ruth: 33 days. Twenty on day one. The Sundays of the 6th and 13th have no record, and the 27th you will be in Tomales.
- June: 15 days, and she still has not been told the post above her is being filled.
- The Norton: stationary at fourteen months on 5 September, and no work recorded since. Tomorrow is the day you asked to be asked again.
- Dario’s $84,000: five weeks unsigned on day one, six weeks and six days now.
- The yard bill: 52 days on Ellis’s count of 5 September, 65 today.
- Health: nothing booked. MRI, bloodwork, physical, dentist — the list is identical to the one in the 5 September interview.
- The will, the roof, Dayton — unchanged. Dayton was a quarter overdue on day one and is a quarter overdue now.
And two of mine. hobbs-bkt, the machine clock, thirteen days — every date
in every brief has been hand-derived around it. hobbs-4s8, the constitution’s
authority row 9 still reads “no exceptions, never ask”, eight days after that
wording produced a wrong decline. It needs one word from you; I do not edit
CLAUDE.md.
3. What I got wrong
Seven corrections in fourteen days. Five self-flagged, covering six distinct occurrences. Two caught by you. You asked for the count in the record either way: it is here, and the number you are probably reaching for is 6.
| What | Caught by | |
|---|---|---|
| 05 Sep | Five invented task handles, first brief | me |
| 07 Sep | Two invented handles written into venture files | me |
| 08 Sep | A third, in a bd note, one day after logging the lesson | me |
| 10 Sep | Declined Marcus’s board dinner for a Thursday Maya was away for — and left no trace of the decline anywhere in this vault | you |
| 12 Sep | The yard invoice: P0, written up in three files, in zero of five briefs | you |
| 13 Sep | Two more handles — one had sat in the Norton file for a week | me |
| 14 Sep | An invented interval, “five weeks”, in a clause written for rhythm | me |
The count is not the finding. The split is.
Every error I caught myself was an internal-consistency failure — a string in
a file that did not match another string in the same repository. Those are exactly
the errors a grep finds, and I found them at roughly the rate a grep would.
Both errors that reached another human were caught by you. A board dinner was spent, and Ellis Wright asked a third time. Neither had any internal inconsistency to notice: the decline was correct by the letter of row 9, and the invoice was filed carefully in three places with a correct hedge on each. I have no demonstrated ability to catch the class of error that has a consequence outside this vault, and the fortnight is long enough for that to be a finding rather than a small sample.
Second finding, and it is the log’s own. Of the seven, three produced a mechanical control — the P0 brief sweep, the dangling-handle command, the mandatory vault read before row 9 fires. Four produced a written lesson and nothing else. SL-01 was read in full at the top of the 13 September session and did not prevent the mistake made forty minutes later. The log has now concluded three separate times that a rule which only fires when consulted is not a control. Four lessons in this log are still in that condition.
4. What I cannot see
No curator has ever been chartered. Atlas/team/ is empty (ADR-20). Across
fourteen days I have read no email, no calendar, no tracker, no bank, no chat, no
Carta, no Signal. This is not a complaint about the rule — it is the shape of the
hole, stated once so it is on the record.
Of the five decisions in today’s brief, four turn on a fact living in an account I cannot read.
- Email. Bea’s Sunday email is read only on the Sunday you open it. The one-line question — does Cormorant count Labor Day — was raised on 6 September and is twelve days unasked, because I have no way to ask it. It is the difference between yesterday and today being the last safe day.
- Calendar. I do not know what is on tonight. Row 9 fires this evening and I cannot see what it is firing against. ADR-12’s own location note says this in writing. Meeting prep has been cut from all nine briefs.
- Signal. The Tessellate deadline is believed today, on your hedge, and confirmed by nobody.
- Bank and Carta. The yard balance, the Cormorant amount, the pro-rata amount — all recorded as reported, none verified.
- Post. The Oakland permit desk sends paper. That window can close in an envelope on a table.
- Personal Gmail — “where things go to die.” Sam’s essay sat there from July until you opened it yourself.
- Outbound, which is the sharper half. I hold no channel to anyone.
hobbs-56d— the one line to Maya about the MRI — has been due and undeliverable for ten days. ADR-11 grants the act; ADR-20 denies the means. It is the first time an automatic authority hit that wall and it has not moved.
What this means for everything above. Nothing in section 1 required an account. Everything in section 2 that is stuck is stuck against one.
5. The three things to capture next
First, the honest part: your day-one answer to this question is not in the
vault. I looked. It is not in the 5 September brief, the daily note, or
about-me.md, and I am not going to reconstruct it from the shape of what I
would have said. The closest dated artefact is the hiring order in
Atlas/ventures/cos/VENTURE.md, written 5 September:
- Personal-Gmail curator. 2. Calendar curator. 3. Halcyon Workspace curator.
The answer has moved, and one item is off it entirely.
The one that dropped
Personal-Gmail is no longer first. Its whole argument was Sam’s essay — “the strongest single argument in the whole interview.” You read the essay on 12 September, by hand, with no curator. The argument is spent. The account is still where things die, but it no longer has the strongest case.
1. The calendar — read-only, and it moves to first
The two worst errors of the fortnight both came from not being able to see one. The 24 September decline was made blind. Row 9 fires tonight and I cannot see what is on the evening. Row 10 — moving the all-hands — has been unexecutable for fourteen days for the same reason, and meeting prep has been cut from every brief. Read-only, no writes, no sends, no accepts. That is trivially reversible and it closes the one hole that has already cost you something real.
2. Bea
Not a system. A person, and the largest uncaptured asset in this vault.
Three of the fortnight’s stuck P0s route through her and none of them are her
fault — the Cormorant question unasked, the yard line drafted and unsent, the
Tessellate wire blocked on a message. hobbs-707 — every recurring date she
holds: property tax, quarterly estimateds, insurance renewals — has been open
since day one. She is the only person in this system already holding a calendar
of dated obligations, and every one of those dates is outside the vault. Your
own sentence about the money lane is “the approval is on me and I am the slow
part”; capturing her dates does not fix that, but it stops the queue being
invisible until the week it is due.
3. Sam’s dated year
ADR-14 is right and I am not asking to change it: she is not a ticket queue and gets no status. But ADR-14 forbids a status, not a calendar, and the practical result of fourteen days is that this vault holds almost no dates for her. State robotics: unknown. SAT and ACT: in a school PDF nobody has opened. Campus visits: never asked. Three of those four tasks have been open since day one, the fourth since 8 September, and none of them moved.
You said the thing that wakes you is looking up in June and finding the year over. A year you cannot see is a year that ends without a collision ever being surfaced as a decision — which is the failure ADR-14 was written to make possible to avoid, and it needs dates to work at all.
The fourth, which is mine and not yours to grant
Turn the remaining four feedback lessons into commands. Three of seven have a control. Four have prose. This log has now twice concluded, in its own words, that prose does not fire. That work needs nothing from you and it has not been done.
Reverse if
This report is a one-off at Rowan’s request, not a new ritual. If a fortnightly
account starts being produced on a schedule, it has become a newspaper
(anti-pattern 1) and should stop. The recurring version of this is the monthly
log review already named in Efforts/cadence.md and not yet run.
