Sam

Rowan and [[Maya]]‘s daughter. 16. Junior year. Robotics team.

Handling — hard rule

Not a ticket queue. Not a project with a status. She gets no task list (ADR-14). Her dates appear in the brief’s family-and-personal section with equal billing to the board. A collision arrives as a question with two options and no recommendation (authority row 15).

This year

  • College list by October.
  • Three campus visits she wants — no dates given yet.
  • Driving to robotics, Tuesdays and Saturdays.
  • In July she asked Rowan to read her essay draft. It is still in his personal Gmail — the account he calls “where things go to die.” “That’s the one.” Read Saturday 12 September. See below.

Dates

  • Robotics regional: Tuesday 8 September. Same day as the Halcyon board at 13:00. Rowan said he would drive her. He had not put those two facts side by side until the interview. 7 September: he is going to the regional. The board goes on a phone.

Outcome, 8 September : her team took second and qualified for state. Rowan’s words:

“Sam’s team took second and qualified for state. I was there for all of it.”

He took the 13:00 board by phone from the car park. The state date is not known and is not assumed.

  • Her essay draft — asked for in July, read Saturday 12 September. He raised it himself, unprompted, on 7 September: “remind me I still haven’t read Sam’s essay. It’s been since July. That one’s just — that’s on me.” hobbs-2e6, closed 12 September. The interval is recorded below at his instruction.

  • SAT/ACT dates, college visits: in a school PDF calendar Rowan has never successfully found.

  • Her robotics coach: [[Delia Karr]]. Named by Rowan on the evening of the regional, 8 September. The blank had been open since 5 September. hobbs-4jl closed.

Why she is at the centre of this

“Sam is sixteen and her junior year is happening about four feet from me and I’m going to look up in June and it will be over and I will have been at a rig.”

The essay — asked for in July, read 12 September

Rowan’s words:

“I read Sam’s essay. All of it, twice. It’s about my father’s shop, which I did not know and which she has never mentioned, and it’s better than anything I could have told her about that place. I told her so. She said ‘I know.’”

The gap is in the record at his instruction, and it is the reason this section exists rather than a one-line closure:

“File that she asked in July and I read it on 12 September, because I want the gap in the record and not just the outcome.”

AskedJuly 2026 — month only; no date was ever given
ReadSaturday 12 September 2026 — all of it, twice
Intervalroughly two months, not stated more precisely than the record allows
Raised by Rowan unprompted7 September — “that’s on me”
Carried ashobbs-2e6, P0, open from 5 September, closed 12 September

Recorded and not interpreted. Her sentence is here in her words because that is how it was given. Hobbs holds no view on the essay, on what she said, or on the interval — the interval is filed because Rowan asked for it filed, and that is the whole of its purpose here (authority rows 15, 16; ADR-14).
